About Me

15061603_Michele_Conklin-088_Retouch-WebAs a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Registered Art Therapist in private practice, I work with individuals and couples on a wide range of issues. My focus is to help clients gain a greater sense of awareness, which leads to increased clarity about themselves and the way in which they experience life and relationships. This process of discovery opens up new pathways for growth and satisfaction.

I work from a relational Gestalt perspective, which means that the focus on the present moment and I am an active participant in what is unfolding in the session. I believe that the best therapeutic work comes from the trust and collaboration built between client and therapist. My interest and study of Gestalt therapy began when I was an Intern at the Southern California Counseling Center, a community mental health center that provides much-needed low-cost care to a diverse population in Los Angeles. I have done additional training with the Pacific Gestalt Institute and serve as a board member for the Gestalt Therapy Institute of Los Angeles.

My practice also includes working with trauma. Trauma may include a single adverse incident or a more persistent pattern throughout one’s life. I utilize the Trauma Resiliency Model and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to treat trauma. Both modalities work with the neurobiology response to trauma to shift the way in which past experiences are held in the mind and body and to increase resiliency.

As a Registered Art Therapist, I believe everyone is inherently creative and the inclusion of a creative process in therapy can offer additional means for expression, exploration and discovery. I have used art therapy with clients of all ages, couples and with families. No experience with art making is required.

I hold a Master’s Degree in Marital and Family Therapy with a specialization in Clinical Art Therapy from Loyola Marymount University and a Bachelor’s degree cum laude from New York University. Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked as a creative executive in the entertainment industry and have a particular insight into the challenges of working in that industry.
