Can EMDR be done virtually?
The good news is the answer is yes, EMDR can be done virtually and deliver powerful treatment results.
What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is an evidence-based treatment method that treats trauma, depression, anxiety, OCD, addiction, and other distressing life experiences. It works by helping the brain reprocess memories that have become “stuck” due to overwhelming events.
When something disturbing happens, your brain and nervous system store that experience in a way that’s meant to protect you from future harm. This is part of your natural survival response. But sometimes, the memory doesn’t get processed fully and ends up stuck in your nervous system. This can lead to symptoms like flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, emotional numbness, or a sense of being “on edge,” even long after the event is over.
In EMDR therapy the disturbing memory is brought into the present moment, in a safe and supportive environment. As you recall the experience, you are guided through sets of bilateral stimulation. Bilateral stimulation activates both sides of the brain through eye movements, tapping or sounds. This helps the brain process the targeted memory. While engaging in this process, you also tune into any emotions, body sensations, or thoughts that arise.
As the brain reprocesses the event, the emotional intensity begins to fade, and new insights or forgotten details may emerge. This can create a more balanced and compassionate understanding of what happened. Once the memory is fully reprocessed, it no longer carries the same emotional weight, and your nervous system can finally begin to relax.
In both in-person and virtual EMDR, this core process stays the same.
How can EMDR therapy be done virtually?
At its core, EMDR Therapy—whether in person or online—is about helping you process and heal from difficult experiences using bilateral stimulation (BLS). The biggest difference with virtual EMDR is which kind of stimulation we use.
When I am working with a client in person, I might use a tactile tool like handheld pulsers or guide your eyes back and forth by having you follow my fingers. In a virtual session, these tools are adapted for the online space.
Here at Conklin Therapy Collective, I use an online platform called EMDR Remote that allows you to follow moving dots to create eye movements. I can adjust the speed and length of the movements to create the optimal processing pace for you. To enhance the processing, I may also guide you to tap on your shoulders, arms or knees in left-right rhythm. Audio stimulation, such as beeps or music, can also be added.
These are mechanics of how EMDR is done, but the most important part of the process is feeling safe–safe enough to feel comfortable working with material that can be emotionally challenging. This comes from having a trusting relationship with your therapist. Your therapist will work with you to select which material gets processed, make sure you are tolerating the process well, and making adjustments as needed. Whether online or in person, these are all things that I am paying close attention to with my clients during the EMDR process.
Is online EMDR effective at treating, trauma, anxiety, OCD and other conditions?
Research and client experiences show that online EMDR is safe and effective for treating many conditions, including severe trauma and complex PTSD. I have seen this in my own practice, witnessing clients do deep and transformational work. Many of my clients even prefer online sessions because they can do them in the comfort of their own home, which may help them feel more at ease during the session and relaxed afterwards.
